Skull base clinical fellowship

The main pathologies treated

Program description

Every year, the Neurosurgery Department welcomes 2 fellows dedicated to skull base surgery.

The fellowship is designed for a 1-2 year experience.

Objectives :

This fellowship offers advanced training in the management of skull base pathologies.

In the course of this training, cranial fellows acquire in-depth knowledge,

  • anatomy and skull base techniques in our Experimental Neurosurgery and Skull Base Laboratory,
  • skull base pathologies and their management through patient assessment, surgical management and follow-up in the department and in consultation.

Fellows also take part in clinical research activities or in the research activities of the Experimental Neurosurgery and Skull Base Laboratory. They have the opportunity to publish research projects based on the department’s patient series, with the aim of a minimum of 2 publications in international journals by the end of the fellowship.

Fellows also participate as co-organizers and teachers in our numerous courses in Paris (4 courses per year) and Strasbourg (2 courses per year).

They also benefit from an introduction to learned societies and working groups dedicated to skull base surgery, in preparation for a career in this field of neurosurgery.

Clinical functions

  • Fellows actively participate in the skull base activity. Together with Prof. S. Froelich, they manage the department’s complex intracranial pathologies, both in the operating theatre and on the ward.
  • Fellows are an integral part of the Neurosurgery Department. They are therefore involved in the training of interns and medical students.
  • Twice a month, they organize and run teaching sessions for interns and medical students: case discussions, theoretical presentations, journal club.
  • They also participate with other practitioners in the department’s medical coverage and on-call duties to ensure continuity of care. Depending on their administrative status, they have a consulting activity and their own patients, whom they manage in collaboration with the entire Neurosurgery team.
  • They take part in all the department’s multidisciplinary meetings, and in particular lead the monthly skull base RCP, a recourse chordoma.
